Rhys Wilson

Rhys Wilson has two decades of experience across emergency services and land management. He is an experienced ranger, forester, and firefighter, and is the owner and principal of Bushfire Solutions Tasmania, providing hazard mitigation consultancy and fabrication of custom firefighting equipment.


Currently serving as a metropolitan firefighter, Rhys has held full-time roles as a Fire Crew Supervisor specializing in remote area and winch attack operations, Fire Operations Officer, Parks Ranger, Forest Officer, and Ski Patroller.

He operates across all levels of wildfire incident command and prescribed burning and is qualified as a Level 2 Operations Officer, Divisional Commander, Complex Burn Incident Controller, Aerial Incendiary Operations Supervisor and Air Attack Supervisor.

Rhys has worked on major incidents locally and internationally, including deployments to Canada as a Divisional Supervisor and Ignitions Specialist, as well as national campaign fires, flood responses, and complex operations such as mass whale strandings in Tasmania.
He remains actively involved in community service, contributing to volunteer firefighting, ambulance services, and ski patrol leadership at his local resort.

Rhys is passionate about developing the next generation of firefighters, with a focus on scenario-based training, strong leadership and the integration of emerging technologies to improve safety and operational effectiveness in increasingly extreme fire conditions.

He has been awarded the National Emergency Medal, emergency service citations from the New South Wales and Tasmanian Premiers, and the Tasmanian Fire Service Operational Service Medal. Rhys holds a Bachelor of Natural Environment and Wilderness Studies from the University of Tasmania, along with certificate qualifications in forestry, fireground leadership, and workplace health and safety.

Based in northern Tasmania, Rhys lives off-grid with his wife and young family, embracing a lifestyle centered on the outdoors.
